Our doctors at Surgeons Site have been performing the Lap Band procedure for over ten
years, and recognize the struggle facing those who need to lose weight. As doctors, we also
know that being overweight can lead to serious and fatal health problems. We work with you
before and after the surgery, to help you reach your unique health goals.
WHAT IS THE LAP BAND?
The adjustable band is placed laparoscopically around the upper part of the stomach,
dividing it into a small pouch above the band and larger pouch below the band. This limits
the food intake, which causes patients feel full after eating small portions. The procedure was
approved by the FDA in June 2001 and has been the leading weight-loss surgical solution in
Europe and Australia since 1993.
The band is connected to an access port below the skin’s surface by thin, kink-resistant
silicone tubing. The port allows the surgeon to adjust the size of the Lap Band system by
adding or removing saline to inflate or deflate the band, depending on the patient’s
individual weight-loss needs.
Each patient’s goal is unique, but on average we like to see our patients lose 1-3 pounds per
week. Adjustments to the band are made whenever necessary during the follow up
appointments.
Because the device is inserted laproscopically, no cutting or stapling of the stomach is
required and there is no need to bypass portions of the stomach or intestines. This means
reduced pain, no hospital stay, and less recovery time compared to the invasive gastric
bypass surgery. The procedure is also reversible.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE
Clinically Severe Obesity is considered a chronic disease. In the United States, more than 12
million people suffer from this condition and its medical, psychological, social and
economic consequences. Clinically Severe Obesity is typically defined as an excess weight
of 60 pounds or more. Being only 25% above your ideal body weight is linked with
increased risk of health problems, disease and even death.
Our patients are familiar with the struggles of yo-yo dieting and despite their best efforts, they
are unable to reach a healthy weight. We understand that the Lap Band alone is not enough,
and we are here to assist you on your journey to a healthier, lighter you.
